Migrate your VCOM account to secure authentication

Last modified:

Secure authentication with mc Cloud

With mc Cloud, meteocontrol provides a secure user and identity management portal to better protect your VCOM account, for example by allowing you to set up two-factor authentication (2FA). See also mc Cloud.

After receiving an in-app trigger, you can migrate your VCOM account to mc Cloud on your own. If you have multiple accounts, you must migrate them individually.

Prerequisites

  • None, but you have to wait for the in-app trigger in VCOM.

Steps

  1. A pop-up window appears in VCOM requesting you to migrate to mc Cloud.

  2. Select Migrate to mc Cloud to start the migration process.

  1. A new browser tab opens.

  2. Check the Email address already entered in the input field: It should be the email address of your current VCOM account. If you want to use a different email address or plus-addressing for your mc Cloud account, change the input. See expand box below for more information.

Caution

You can not use the same email address for multiple accounts as the email address becomes the main account identifier in mc Cloud.

What if I use the same email address for several VCOM accounts?

If you have multiple VCOM accounts or you are an external provider who needs access to different assets of different organizations, you must as well provide a unique email address for every mc Cloud account you are migrating.

But to avoid creating multiple new email accounts, you can simply use the plus-addressing feature, which is widely supported by email providers (also called subaddressing or tagged addressing). It allows you to just add a +tag before the @ symbol to make each email address unique. You can choose any tag you want as long as it is placed between the + sign and the @ symbol. However, all emails sent to your plus-tagged addresses will still arrive in one place: your main inbox. So, you do not have to check your emails in multiple places.

Examples

Use case 1: You are using the following email address for three different VCOM accounts to carry out different tasks within your organization: your-name@company.com. Now, you want to migrate these three accounts to mc Cloud.

Solution 1: You add three different plus tags to your main email address according to the tasks you carry out with the account, for example:

  • Email address for account 1: your-name+admin@company.com

  • Email address for account 2: your-name+operations@company.com

  • Email address for account 3: your-name+investor@company.com

Emails for all three accounts will arrive in the main inbox of your-name@company.com.

Use case 2: You are using the following email address for three different VCOM accounts of three different organizations: yourname@email.com. Now, you want to migrate these three accounts to mc Cloud.

Solution 2: You add three different plus tags to your main email address according to the organization they belong to, for example:

  • Email address for account 1: yourname+best-solar@email.com

  • Email address for account 2: yourname+allenergy@email.com

  • Email address for account 3: yourname+powerpartner@email.com

Tip: With plus-addressing, you can now automatically filter all emails into different folders.

Why do I have to verify my email address again?

With the account migration, several new security features will be enabled, such as 2FA or single sign-on (SSO) - also via Microsoft or Google. These features require the permission to send you emails, for example, in case you forgot your password or lost your 2FA device.

Therefore every email address in VCOM has to be uniquely linked to only one account. This is not the case right now as VCOM uses unique usernames instead of email addresses as account identifier. Which makes it possible that multiple usernames use the same email address. With the migration, we are changing the account identifier from username to email address.

Verifying your email address links it uniquely to your account.

  1. Select Submit.

  2. A submit confirmation appears.

Caution

Do not close the current tab until you have received the email in the next step. If you do not receive the email (also not in your spam folder), you can re-submit your email address only in this tab. Check the spelling very carefully.

  1. You receive an email to activate your mc Cloud account.

  2. Select Activate account there accordingly.

  2. Select Confirm your action.

Why do I have to confirm my action twice?

Double confirmations are usual industry recommendations for B2B software providers, especially in the critical energy infrastructure industry.

  1. On the next page, you set and confirm the password for your mc Cloud account. Due to increased security standards in mc Cloud, the password requirements have been strengthened compared to VCOM. If you already use a strong password for your VCOM account, you can reuse it here. Otherwise, you must set a new password. The dynamic input field will indicate when you meet the password requirements.

  2. Select Reset password.

  1. You receive an email that confirms your password update.

Your VCOM account is now migrated to an mc Cloud account, and you can use all new security features and enter VCOM from the mc Cloud portal.
